Day 1.
Arrival day. Transfer from the airport to your accommodation. Depending on your flight and arrival location, we’ll see if there’s time for a walk to explore the area.
Day 2. Zahara de la Sierra
Today’s circular walk is an accessible and impressive way to explore the area. The route consists of well-maintained paths that are easy to walk on, even in wet weather.
We depart from Zahara de la Sierra, a medieval hilltop town. From the Arab castle, you have a fantastic view of the entire area. We follow the pleasant path along the clear blue reservoir towards the Arroyo Molinos recreation area. From there, the challenging part of the walk begins: a steep climb up to the Las Palomas mountain pass. Of course, we are rewarded with magnificent views of the Grazalema Mountains, the peaks of El Mogote and El Gastor, the reservoir, and the surrounding valleys.
After the climb, we descend slightly towards Zahara. Along the way, we pass a traditional olive oil press, one of the few remaining in Spain. We conclude with a final climb to the charming medieval town of Zahara de la Sierra.
Distance 12 km / Level 1-2 / 4 hours walking time
Day 3. Grazalema Peñón Grande
This is an interesting hike over rocks, mountain meadows, and through forests surrounding the Peñón Grande. You’ll walk through a characteristic part of the Sierra de Grazalema Natural Park, with views of the highest peaks in the province of Cádiz: Torreón (1,648 meters), Simancón (1,569 meters), and El Reloj (1,535 meters). In winter, it gets very cold here, and you’ll be walking through snow. We don’t have to worry about that on this trip.
Distance: 10 km / Level: 1-2 / 4 hours walking time
Day 4. El Bosque to Benamahoma
The Majaceite River route is a very accessible and wonderfully refreshing walk along the water, between the two white villages of El Bosque and Benamahoma. The path winds along the river on the border of two nature parks: Alcornocales and Grazalema.
We walk through a forest of ash, elm, eucalyptus, and wild fig trees. Throughout the walk, we hear the sound of the flowing river and birdsong: this is home to the wagtail, blackbird, robin, and golden oriole.
The Majaceite River is the southernmost river in Europe where trout still live – and with a bit of luck, we might even spot an otter!
Distance: 14 km / Level 1-2 / 507 m elevation gain / 450 m descent / 3.5 hours walking time
Day 5. Ronda.
Today we visit Ronda and take a walk through the valley to the old town.
Ronda is one of the most spectacular and characteristic pueblos blancos (white villages) of Andalusia. Situated on a high plateau, the city is bisected by the deep gorge of the Guadalevín River. The famous Puente Nuevo – an impressive 18th-century bridge – connects the old Moorish town with the newer, 15th-century part and offers breathtaking views of the gorge and the surrounding mountains.
Our walk takes us through the fertile agricultural fields of the Ronda valley to the foot of the iconic Puente Nuevo. From there, we ascend into Ronda’s historic center, where we can gaze down into the deep gorge as we walk
across the old bridge.
Impressive!
Distance 8.5 km / Level 1-2
373 m ascent / 373 m descent / 2.5 hours walking time
Day 6 . Grazalema and river Campobuche
Today we’re gearing up for the longest hike of the week: a varied circular walk through the heart, the essence of the Sierra de Grazalema. The route follows the Campobuche River, through open meadows, past ancient oaks and cork oaks, goat farms, and the Patagalano Dolmen. Nature and culture are combined during this beautiful walk, with spectacular views once again.
Distance 18 km / Level 2 / 5 hours walking time / 342 m Ascent / 342 m Descent / 945 m Max
Day 7. Cornicabra peak
Finally, an adventurous hike to the imposing Cornicabra Peak, which, at 1289 meters, offers a hike full of surprising challenges. After a wooded section lined with ancient oak trees, a steep section follows:
Then comes the highlight of the hike: the climb to the summit. This stage proves to be the most challenging. But also a wonderful experience, having pulled it off together as a final effort. Who will plant the flag?
Distance 15.2 km / Level 2 / 5 hours of hiking
