11 Day Cycling Holiday Spain – Portugal

A challenging cycling holiday from Seville, Spain to Faro, Portugal. The trip has a nice build-up to the tough climbs in the border region and runs down to the coast. We get to know two neighbouring countries that are very different in character, landscape and culture, also culinary.

We ride from Andalusia through the Alentejo to the Algarve, cycle through large cities and tiny hamlets and follow the course of the Guadiana river until it flows into the Atlantic Ocean.

This 11-day MTB cycling trip is a step up from our Seville-Cádiz trip: these are trips for experienced cyclists with a good condition. Cycling is the most important part of the day, many routes run through hilly and medium-mountain landscapes and sometimes there is a lot of climbing. Of course there are also descents! And you can also do this trip on an MTB E-bike.

Of course there is time for cultural visits and relaxing by a swimming pool.

Go on an adventure!

Program

Day 1.

You will be picked up and taken to your accommodation in Seville. When the whole group is together, we will have a drink together, give an idea of the trip and there is time for questions. Depending on the flight times, we can dine together in one of the good restaurants near our hotel. This way we can get to know each other a bit.

Overnight stay in Seville hotel Ilunion Alcora  or a similar hotel.

Day 2. Guided tour of Seville

After adjusting the bicycles to personal wishes (saddle height, handlebar height, etc.) we take a tour through the city. Seville has an excellent cycling network, developed since 2007. Today we will cycle around 30 km in the city and pass the most important monuments.

In the evening we will have a nice tapas meal.

Overnight stay in Seville hotel  Ilunion Alcora   or a similar hotel.

Day 3. From Seville to Niebla

This tour partly follows the paths used by thousands of pilgrims who come to the village of El Rocio every year at Pentecost to honour the Virgin Rocio. They come from far and wide, with horses and horse-drawn carts and the flamenco clothing makes it a colourful whole. Partly we ride on their gravel and sand paths; easy to do with the bicycles we have at our disposal. Today’s final destination is Niebla, dating from the time of Muslim rule. The impressive city walls with their 50 watchtowers have been well preserved.

Overnight stay in Niebla.  68 km / +435 m -425 m  .

Day 4. From Niebla to Lepe

We leave the town of Niebla along the castle of Guzmán, completely built into the city walls. We cycle partly on the Via Verde del Litoral: an old railway whose rails have been removed, creating a sloping cycle path. This old railway line was designed to transport fish from Lepe to Madrid, and minerals from El Andévalo to the coast. We cycle through fragrant pine forests and can fill our water bottles along the way at a Roman watering place from the 2nd century AD.

Overnight stay in Lepe. 63 km  /  +260m – 275 m

Day 5. From Lepe to Granado

Today we cycle through the nature reserve of El Malatao. Partly on dirt paths between the holm oaks and pine trees, here and there groups of sheep or goats, ruins of farmhouses and the sweet smell of the cistus rose.

If we do cycle on asphalt, they are roads that are hardly or no longer used by cars.

Then we arrive at the orange grove of Don Simon. Ecologically speaking, this company strives to deliver the ‘greenest’ orange juice and is good for 40% of the national juice production. Via the village of Villanueva de los Castillejos we reach our final destination in a long descent: El Granado.

Overnight stay in  El Granado. 45 km  /  +353 m -238 m

Day 6 . From Granado to M értola from Spain to Portugal

Challenging and beautiful route, partly along the Guadiana River, on quiet asphalt roads and nature trails, past hamlets such as Picoitos and Fernandez. Steep climbs alternate with steep descents, where we cross the border of Spain and Portugal. At the end of the day we cross the Guadiana river and are in Mértola, a beautiful, originally Moorish town in the middle of the nature park ’the Valley of Guadiana’, through which we cycled.

Overnight stay in Mértola 35 km  /  +531 m -643 m

Day 7. Day rest in M értola

Besides relaxing by the pool, there is plenty to see in this Moorish town built on a hill. Think of the medieval castle with beautiful views in all directions. At the foot of the castle lies the only preserved mosque in Portugal, from the 11th century. Next to the castle you can see the excavations of an Islamic settlement.

Mértola is a charming town, with special streets to discover and to drink a first glass of port or vinho verde with the locals. You can also rent kayaks at the river to sail down the Guadiana.

Overnight stay in Mértola

Day 8: From Mértola to Alcoutim; from Alentejo to Algarve

After a day of rest, this will be the day of few kilometers and many drops of sweat. We have already ridden well, so we go for it! From Mértola we look for the Guadiana river again as soon as possible and ride over a part of the Santiago pilgrimage route; stony, earthen paths. We climb until we arrive in half-abandoned hamlets, spread out in wild hilly landscape with beautiful views. Sometimes it is necessary to cross small streams in the valleys. We are often alone in this untouched landscape, until we are back in the inhabited world. Then we ride a stretch on asphalt, until we can get back on the nature trails. All this ends in a long descent to our final destination: Alcoutim, in the Algarve.

Overnight stay in Alcoutim 45 km +629 m -683 m

Day 9: Alcoutim to Vila Real de San Antonio

Today we will continue cycling along the Guadiana as long as possible. Nice and relaxed cycling with a beautiful view of Spain on the other side of the river. After crossing the Rio Odeleite we will have two tough climbs, but we already have quite a few kilometres in our legs so that will be fine. After each climb there will of course be a descent and so we zoom past Castro Marim with its castle and salt areas, towards the coast. Here the Guadiana, which we have followed for so long, flows into the Atlantic Ocean.

Overnight stay in Vila Real de san Antonio   64 km  / +462 m -427 m

Day 10: Vila Real de San Antonio to Faro

Along this beloved coast we seek out the smaller roads as much as possible. Inevitably we pass popular seaside resorts such as Monte Gordo and Altura, but there are certainly also beautiful country roads in between. We make a stop in the tiny Cacela Velha, where a tour around the church is a must. And then we dive back into the fields, where fruit and vegetable cultivation alternate with golf courses.

We ride along the coastal area, where salt is extracted. The high white mountains are right next to our cycle route.

And so cities and nature alternate, until we reach our final destination of this cycle trip: Faro.

Bem-vindo!

Overnight stay in Faro  73 km /  +291 m – 281 m
