Hiking Holiday Costa De La Luz

Costa de la Luz, the ‘coast of light’, runs from Tarifa to Cádiz. With this varied walking holiday you will discover an authentic, still unknown part of Spain that contains all the famous Spanish ingredients.Think of the passionate flamenco, sherry, bulls and delicious tapas.And of course the vast Atlantic Ocean to take a refreshing dip after – or even during our walks.Your hotel is also a stone’s throw from the beach and sea.Besides a long coastal walk that takes us over 100 meter high cliffs, from where we can even see Africa, we also go inland.Walk via a donkey path through the old cork oak forests near Facinas and we climb the ridge of the Sierra de la Plata, from where you have an overwhelming view over the entire coastal region.We visit the ruins of a Roman city that lived off tuna fishing, and afterwards taste this delicacy ourselves with a good glass of local wine.We also walk through La Breña Natural Park, an area full of fragrant pine forests. The bright green treetops contrast beautifully with the azure blue sea.Of course, a visit to a characteristic white Andalusian village with its winding streets should not be missed.What could be more fun than walking there yourself through a varied hilly landscape full of corn and corn fields? We also visit lively, versatile Cádiz.This oldest city in Europe is located on a peninsula in the ocean.The special light from which the region, the Costa de la Luz, owes its name, gives the city the allure of a film set.The guides of this trip have lived in this part of Andalusia for years.They love nothing more than to share their enthusiasm about the region with you.

Accommodation: In the months of April to September you will stay in a charming, family-run  hotel Alhambra in the town of Zahora with brightly colored rooms and many plants in the courtyard.The stay is based on a double room with private shower and toilet.In the months of October to March you will stay in  hotel La Janda in the town Vejer de la Frontera. Program

Day 1.

Arrival day. Transfer from airport to your accommodation. Depending on the flight and where you arrive, there is still time for a walk to explore the neighborhood.

Day 2. Los Caños de Meca – Kaap van Trafalgar – Barbate

A coastal and forest walk. We start our day in the village of los Caños de Meca (sandy beach, freshwater springs, rocks) and walk through La Breña nature park. We enjoy a very nice view over the Atlantic Ocean clear weather even to Africa; the houses of Tangier can be seen. At Torre del Tajo, a 15th century watchtower, we have one last glance at the spectacular cliffs before we enter the pine forests. We walk towards el Palomar de la Breña: one pigeon complex from the 18th century, Here we eat a snack in the accompanying restaurant, before we continue walking towards the coast. On the way we see the Cape of Trafalgar looming, We walk back to Los Caños de Meca, where we can take a refreshing dive in the ocean. A nice end to the day is a walk around the Trafalgar lighthouse.

Day 3. Tarifa and the cork trees from Facinas

We drive in the morning to Tarifa, the southernmost point of Spain. From the Mirador del- Estrecho we have a beautiful view of the Strait of Gibraltar and the African coastline, here just 14 km away. The beach at Tarifa is a windsurfing paradise. We enjoy some free time to visit the white town visit and buy a picnic for our walk. After visit Tarifa we drive to Facinas, where we visit a chapel: there begins our walk. We walk past the old cork oaks, which are still every nine years be scaled. We walk on a donkey trail, meandering, gritty, sometimes we have to skip a stream of water. We have a view of a valley with cork oak forests on the other side. We have a picnic somewhere in a nice spot and then walk back.

Distance 12 km / level 1-2 / 3 ½ hours walking.

Day 4. From mountain to beach.

This hike starts at the high rocks of the Sierra de la Plata, combing, spectacular to photograph. The earthen path turns into a sandy path, the vegetation changes with us and we now walk through pine forests. There are beautiful views over the ocean and on the ridges. We come to a ‘valley’, a gorge where you feel yourself in a western. We walk over it up to a road, follow a steep descending path ending at the beach. Boulders in the sea, possibility to swim and walk along this wild coast. We walk back to the road and after a short while we come to a small charming bar where we can eat a fish and a drink beer / wine, with that beautiful view of Morocco again. We walk a uphill loop through forests and partly over rocks back to our starting point, and drive back to Zahora.

Day 5. Cádiz.

Today we visit Cádiz, an hour away from our hotel. We take a walk through this oldest city in Western Europe, dating from 1100 BC. Nowadays Cádiz is one big monument from the 18th, 19th century with a homogeneous, colonial architecture: a city that embraces you. We will of course show you the most beautiful places: Plaza san Juan de Dios, the cathedral, the flower market. Then we visit a small, very charming bodega and learn all the secrets of the sherry through an English speaking guide. Tasting the sherry is of course part of it! Then we have lunch: tapas on the old covered market, something for everyone. Then we continue our city walk and visit (optional) Torre Tavira: the highest tower in Cádiz, with a ‘camera oscura’ that gives us a unique view of the city in living images. A guide tells us the many things worth knowing about Cádiz. There is also a terrace with a beautiful view of the city, the harbor and the bay: perfect for photos. After that there is free time. We meet at the Cathedral and walk back to the vans that take us to our hotel. There is some free time before we come together to eat something.

Day 6. Lighthouse to Baelo Claudia.

We start near Atlanterra, a beautiful hill with capital villas, along which in May / June, tuna fish flow towards the Mediterranean Sea. That was 2000 years ago even so, when Baelo Claudia was built. This Roman city lived from tuna; the “factory” is still well preserved, as well as the forum, the old streets, the Roman and even the theater. Very complete – and the Romans saw the same mountains, hills and sea ​​like us during our walk. We walk past a goat farm and a vulture breeding place (buitre leonardo) via a piece of asphalt to a secret road that leads us to the top from a walking dune. As if you have arrived in the desert. We walk down the dune along the beautiful Bolonia beach and visit the Roman city. We lunch in Bolonia, a small hamlet where we enjoy the Otero bar sea ​​view (family business, tasty home-made food). Maybe time for a a dive, before we walk back to the lighthouse. From there we walk on the beach of Atlanterra to Zahara de los Atunes, and drive back to Zahora.

Day 7. La Muela, Santa Lucia Vejer de la Frontera

We drive to Vejer de La Frontera where we give a tour through the winding streets, with beautiful flowers in the patios, the old city wall and we climb an old city tower. Afterwards there is free time to roam through this historic village. of the route descends towards Santa Lucia, to a Roman acuaduct with waterfalls and a natural ‘yakuzi’. We continue our way, which climbs further up the hill to La Muela where we have a snack. After our meal we continue our way back to Vejer de La Frontera through beautiful nature and a view over the valley and the ocean.

Day 8: Transfer to airport and goodby!
